First TV show I had self-insertion fantasies about:
The Monkees. Because I grew up in the landlocked Midwest, in a large, musically-challenged, extended family full of women, as the oldest of three sisters. And I wanted live on the beach. And have a cool car. And be someone's kid sister to their older brother, ya' know, because there supposedly would be less responsibility. Oh, and there was music. Sweet, sweet music.
First fandom in which I interacted (online and in person) with other fans:
Star Trek (TOS & TNG). It was all in person. I had friends that would come to my house and we would watch TNG every single week and never miss an episode. And then they would stay and talk about it afterwards. And we would drive an hour and a half to see the premier of a new TOS movie because it wouldn't come to our small town for a couple of weeks after the release date.
One of my good friends. her mother was a BtVS an, and we would watch and discuss it as well.
I never actually interacted with anyone online in fandom until Harry Potter and Supernatural, and even then, I was a lurker for a long time. I think I mostly went online, because I didn't know anyone in real life in those fandoms.
Pairing in the first slash fanfiction I read:
Gabriel/Sam and Dean/Cas. It was a post-apocalyptic type fic, and I am a sucker for those. The pairing/slash component wasn't a factor for me at all. I was drawn in by storyline/setting.
First RPS/RPF I read:
In general, I don't read RPF, but when I was growing up, our local library had a copy of one Star Trek (TOS) fanzine on hand. In it,there was one story about how part of the crew had ended up on the set of of Star Trek due to a transporter mishap a la "Mirror, Mirror". It was very much like the "The French Mistake" from SPN, and I loved it. Typically, it is only those types of RPFs that I read.
First fanfiction I read that made me think, 'YES, this is exactly the kind of fanfiction I'd like to write...':
My answer is very similar tojennytork's. While technically not fanfiction, I loved and still own Barbara Hambly's Star Trek novel Ishmael a crossover with the TV series Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and saw cameos from various sci-fi and Westerns characters of the time. I love crossovers, or even just shout-outs.

I tried my hand at Chekov/Irina (their back story) when I was younger, but I didn't like the results. I should say this is the first pairing I tired, but not necessarily the first fanfiction I tried.

I have that book! I giggled when they did 'The French Mistake' and wondered if one of the writers had read that story.

Date: 2012-02-27 02:43 am (UTC)Yep. It's because of the first Star Trek fan-run con that Creation Entertainment got it's start. It's the reason we can see the J2 at con today. Star Trek fans may or may not have started 'zines, but there's no arguing they made them popular--including slash.
